Davi Gomes Maranhão, better known in the Capoeira world as Instrutor Mala, was born on April 8, 1985 in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. Mala had his first encounter with Capoeira at the age of nine with Capoeiristas of the region in which he lived. At the age of 10, his mother placed him in a school that organized activities to help needy children of the neighbourhood and children of the street of Recife to learn professional skills for their futures.
While attending the school, Mala met Alex Carneiro da Silva, known in the capoeira world as instructor (negao) who took him to his first Capoeira class. It was then that Mala met a capoeira master who was teaching Capoeira at the school as an extracurricular activity. Mala learned his first steps in Capoeira with him and trained with him for 11 years.
Around the age of 17 Mala started teaching Capoeira to street kids of Recife at a community centre to show them a better way of life. In 2006, Mala started a new life in Vancouver, BC, Canada where he continued training and teaching what he had learned. Shortly after moving to Vancouer,Mala continues to teach Capoeira and perform at various events and venues in the community. He participates in Capoeira festivals throughout North America and frequently returns to Brazil to keep up with the Capoeira scene and fine tune his technique.
